Truth has nothing to do with the conclusion, and everything to do with the methodology.

About This Quote

When scientists examine the evidence, they are not trying to arrive at a conclusion. Instead, they are trying to come up with the best possible explanation for what they have observed. This is important for two reasons. First, because if the scientists were trying to reach a conclusion based on their preconceived opinions, then their conclusions would be too narrow to be useful.

For example, if an astronomer wants to explain how a certain celestial body formed in the universe, then that astronomer should ask every possible question that might explain that body’s existence. The astronomer’s job is not to decide which of these questions are more likely than others. Instead, it is the astronomer’s job to figure out which of these questions makes the most sense and which of these questions will lead to the best explanation for the celestial body’s origin.

Second, because our understanding of science has changed very little over time – we still use the same methods and use the same kinds of explanations – we know that we can trust our conclusions even though we may not be able to understand exactly why those conclusions are supported by evidence.
